| Nyepi is het feest wat hoort bij het Balinese nieuwe jaar (Icaka). Voorafgaand aan Nyepi zijn er reinigings- en offerceremonieën om de slechte geesten te verdrijven. Op Nyepi zelf dient er totale stilte in acht worden genomen. Geen licht, geen muziek, geen verkeer in de straten etc. Het is verboden om huis of hotel te verlaten. Toeristen die op het vliegveld aankomen dienen daar te blijven. Dit om de slechte geesten te doen geloven dat Bali uitgestorven is en zodoende hun interesse in Bali (en bewoners) verliezen. | Nyepi is the celebration of the Balinese new year (Icaka). The day before Nyepi the Balinese indulge in purification- and sacrificerituals to send the evil spirits to the mountains. On Nyepi itself one needs to observe total silence. No lights, no music, no traffic on the streets etc. It is forbidden to leave the house or hotel. Arivals at the airport will have to stay there untill sunrise the day after Nyepi. All this is to make the evil spirits believe that there are no more people living on Bali and will lose their interest in Bali (and its people). |
